I Dig “Digger” — a film review in 300 words

October 31st, 2026 · No Comments · Movies

I just saw “Digger” in IMAX — and it’s Fantastic!

Rarely does a movie generate reviews & opinions spanning from “masterpiece” to “disaster” (!) — so I had to find out for myself.

Even tho I’m leaving in a couple hours for a week On The Road to Kerouac’s hometown of Lowell — I stopped what I was doing to experience this in IMAX while I still could.

And boy — is it ever GREAT on the BIG big-screen! . . . the way it was created to be experienced.

The ‘haters’ just don’t get it.

Created by Alejandro Iñárritu — it’s got elements of his Best Picture masterpiece Birdman in how it plays with theater and reality vs fantasy.

It’s one of those movies with some great plot twists so I can’t spoiler anything — but this should get a Best Picture and Best Production Design nomination at a minimum.

The sets are mind-blowing — and are constantly playing with what’s real and what’s illusion.

“Visually visionary” is scribbled in my notebook from the screening.

Tom Cruise & John Goodman are phenomenal — and both are barely recognizable.

The tone is light & playful & fun & nonstop entertaining.

It’s a dark comedy — and happily people were laughing right from the get-go in the typically-reserved Canadian theater.

And the script is fan-freakin-tastic — and should also get an Oscar nom.

Whatever reviewers or people think about it this week, this is gonna become a (cult) classic in film history.

It’s that rare movie I immediately wanted to see again as soon as it was over.

With John Goodman in it, it sure made me think I was watching a wonderfully weird Coen brothers’ movie.

And as others have pointed out, it certainly has echoes of Dr. Strangelove from 60 years ago … and as I noticed “1984” from 80 years ago.

And in The Cool Sensibility Department — just as The Invite ends with Graham Nash’s “Our House” reflecting the tone & meaning during the credit roll, this has Melanie’s beautiful & poignant “Look What They Did To My Song, Ma”! <3

It’s surreal.  It’s satire.  It’s funny.  It’s constantly changing.  And it speaks to our time … and our future.

Experience this on the biggest screen you can while it’s still possible.
