For some reason Canada lucked out in the groupings — playing our three seed-determining round-robin games against, in order, Norway, Austria and Finland.
Whereas the USA has Russia & Slovakia in their group; and Sweden and the Czechs are in the same group.
We also have the preferred time slot for all the round-robin games — the last game of the day, 9PM local, or Noon in the Eastern time zone in North America.
Whereas the USA is playing all their games at 4:30PM local time, or 7:30AM on the East Coast.
Canada’s Schedule: . . . . . (all times Eastern)
Noon Thurs Feb 13th — Canada vs. Norway
Noon Friday Feb 14th — Canada vs. Austria
Noon Sunday Feb 16th — The Big Game — Canada vs. Finland
7:30AM Thurs Feb 13th — USA vs. Slovakia
7:30AM Sat Feb 15th — USA vs. Russia

May luck, flukey bounces, and referees have nothing to do with the outcomes.

Great stuff. Jeebus, those first 3 games are a bit of a head-scratcher. I can see Hockey Canada being a bit worried, that we mightn’t be battle ready once the real tourny begins. But if the IIHF insists on rankings that don’t reflect competition that includes our best NHLers, there’s not much you can do. (myself, loving that Sochi is only 1 hr ahead of Dar.) Otherwise, one of those ‘golden’ yrs — winter Olympics & World Cup.

We’re gonna kick your butts! No more home ice advantage for you. We were one goal away last time — and nobody’s forgotten.
But how come you guys get the good time slot and our games are at 7:30 in the morning?! That ain’t right!

You’re such a hockey nut! I love it!
I can’t believe you got to go last Olympics when you were over with Mum, you lucky dog! Maybe we’ll be watching this one on the same TV in her living room shortly. See you soon, I hope.

Can’t wait! The best sport at the best tournament. Are you going to make roster sheets like you did last time? Those things were unbelievable.
Either way, look forward to sharing it all with you over the interwebs.

Hey Alex!
Thanks! Glad you used them. Those things were amazing!
But sadly I think I’m too swamped right now with finishing the book and prepping for England.
But I’ll keep ya toasted.
Puck on!
Here’s last Olympics’ roster sheets —

This Team Canada line-up looks siiiiiiiiccckkkk!!!
I wouldn’t mind having a rock-solid in goal, but we’ve got the best offence and defence in the world!
Totally bummed about St. Louis. And Seabrook should be on it too. But other than that, this is going to be the team to beat, no doubt about it.

No Martin St. Louis?!?! What?!?!
I can’t believe Yzerman left his own player off. He’s got more points in the NHL than any other Canadian player since the last Olympics. How crazy is that? I don’t know what bug they’ve got up their butt over Marty. It’s just wrong on so many levels.

Looks like a great team. Can’t believe it’s been 4 years already!
Go Canada Go!!!

This is great, Brian! Thanks for doing this … and your last Olympics. Those were amazing. Hope you can make the team sheets again. Go Canada Go!

I hope NBC doesn’t totally screw up their coverage again. All that f’n editing and censoring bullshit, and not showing the sports live. It’s worth moving to Canada for two weeks just to get away from that crap network and coverage we get here.

You always live it to the maxxxxx!!!
Loooooooove ya!!!

Great stuff , Brian. Very appreciative of your fine efforts once again.
Thanks, buddy !!!!
The Swedes move that puck better w/ all that ice. I’m not sure that the Canadians and US can match the finesse.
And the Canadians need St. Loey on that team. Size is always good, but quick is too important in Olympic hockey.

I am beyond psyched for the Olympics. What a time to be retired, I can watch everything. The hockey is going to be great.
Those jerseys are def different. I’m down for a new look.
LOVE Stamkos, but not sure it’s a good roster move for Canada. He’s really a big question mark.
Hard to believe Canada and US are underdogs with those rosters.
And … I agree with Ken — the Canadians look pretty young, St. Louis would be a natural leader.
16 Mitch Potter // Jan 20, 2014 at 8:33 PM
There are seven NHL team captains on Team Canada. That’s a lotta leaders.

Thanks for the overview. I’m down in Argentina and will be looking for internet streams. I’m hoping that the only Gringo Sports Bar will be carry the games when it gets serious. Watched them 4 years ago there, most fun i have ever had watching hockey. Near heart attack when the Yanks tied it up … in tears when Crosby Golden Goal went in.

Absolute stunner of a compilation to the Gold for Canada. Wow!
I’ve always understood that passion about my neighbors. It is most enduring and admirable. It took my breath away. Even the Miracle on Ice wasn’t close. I think only Brazil w/ soccer would understand this kind of national pride/ birthright. It really is a wonder and a phenomena.

Finally, you’ve got me watching sports. are you happy now?
20 Ross Perlmutter // Feb 14, 2014 at 12:42 PM
Canada has TONS of individual player skills, but I’m not seeing a lot of great “system” hockey out of them yet, and that stuff is innate to the Europeans. Canada has historically won most of its big games by playing “gut check” hockey, and that’s a dangerous game in the Olympics.

Teemu, Jagr and Alfie all scored today. Old guys rule!
